With Black History Month here, you may ask, "What does this mean for me?" In our daily lives, many of us may not know how to best honor, acknowledge, or celebrate cultures, whether our own or somebody else's.

We are excited to have made our final edits to a new publication called The 伊甸园视频 Equity Guide: The Heart Work of School Leadership. The 伊甸园视频 Equity Guide is really a guide of self-discovery, providing a 鈥渮ero entry鈥 pool to the deep end, and resources and learning opportunities for leaders who are intent in growing their skillset and knowledge about equity and how it intersects with our leadership practices. The 伊甸园视频 pro-learning team has used the guide as a primary resource in our 伊甸园视频 New Principal Mentor Training program and Implementation Sessions. The goal is to have the guide available to schools and districts by the 伊甸园视频/WASA Summer Conference, taking place June 25-27 in Spokane.

If we truly want to put equity into action, then perhaps we should consider redefining time throughout the system. How do we define an instructional 鈥減eriod,鈥 a school day, the week, a month, or heaven forbid, the entire school calendar? We love our 180-day calendar so much that we鈥檝e allowed that alone to drive the entire system for decades (the calendar, funding, collective bargaining, etc.) and subsequently blind us to new ways of thinking and doing. It is deeply entrenched and built around the needs of the adults working in the system, not the families we are trying to serve.

I鈥檇 like to start this blog by sharing three things with you - one you know for sure, and two you probably didn鈥檛. First, it鈥檚 Black History Month. You should all know that already. The second thing? To keep my sanity as an educational leader for the last 25 years, I have been an active runner. How those two pieces are connected leads me to the third. My perspective of running was forever changed shortly after 1:00 pm on February 23, 2020, outside the small town of Brunswick, Georgia.

This past Tuesday, a jury in Minnesota found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter in George Floyd鈥檚 death. This poignant and pivotal moment represents another chapter in our country's dialog on policing and race relations. As educators, we should use it to elevate our conversations on race, on justice and accountability, and on the future of our communities.
